Closenberg Hotel

Closenberg Hotel is a colonial-era building on a peninsula overlooking Galle Harbor, containing 20 rooms with seaside terraces and gardens. The property includes an outdoor pool, two restaurants, and complimentary internet throughout the rooms and public areas.

The site began in 1719 as a Dutch fortification called Klossenburg and was later renamed Villa Marina by its owner. During the 1800s, the property changed hands several times before being converted into a hotel in 1965.

The building displays Dutch colonial architecture with broad verandas and high ceilings that reflect Sri Lanka's maritime heritage. These architectural features create a connection to the region's colonial past that guests experience throughout their stay.

The hotel remains bound by an 1889 ownership clause requiring that the estate stay within the Abeywardena family. This unusual legal requirement has helped preserve the property's character and heritage across generations of family stewardship.
