Mirissa beach

Mirissa Beach is a sandy shore along the southern coast of Sri Lanka with shallow, clear water and palm trees lining the edge. The shoreline gently curves, offering both open water and areas where boats and small buildings sit along the sand.

This small fishing village began changing in the 1980s when the first guesthouses opened, gradually drawing visitors to the coast. The area transformed into a destination while fishing continued as a core local activity.

Fishing remains a way of life in this coastal area, with local boats and nets a constant sight along the shore. The harbor embodies this deep-rooted relationship between the community and the sea.

The beach is accessible by taking a train to Weligama station, then a short tuk-tuk ride to the shore. Visit during the dry months for calmer water and easier access, as the rainy season brings rougher conditions and higher waves.

Early morning boat trips head out to spot blue whales and spinner dolphins in the waters nearby. These marine encounters have become a primary reason many travelers come to this area.
