All Saints' Church in Galle Fort is a church with stone pillars supporting timber beams and large stained glass windows that flood the interior with light. The building follows a cruciform layout and blends Victorian Gothic elements with local adaptations for the tropical climate.
The foundation stone was laid in 1868 by Bishop Claughton, funded by Governor Sir Hercules Robinson and the English parish. The building stands on the former site of an 18th-century courthouse.
The interior displays wooden pews and an altar carved from Burmese teak, both featuring Star of David patterns. These carvings blend Christian and Jewish symbols in an unexpected way.
The church sits on Church Road within Galle Fort and is easily reached on foot. Visitors should dress appropriately and be aware that the stone floor can become slippery during heavy rain.
The altar stands where 18th-century gallows once stood for judicial punishment. This unusual placement marks a profound transformation from a site of state punishment to a space of worship.
