Kande Vihara, Buddhist temple in Kalutara District, Sri Lanka
Kande Vihara is a Buddhist temple situated on a hilltop near Aluthgama, comprising several structures such as a stupa, Bo tree, relic chamber, and image house. These different areas serve various functions in the religious life of the place.
The temple was founded in 1734 by Venerable Mong Karapagala Dewamitta, with support from Venerable Monks Udugama Chandrasara and Dedduwa Dhammananda. This establishment marked the beginning of a site with enduring spiritual importance.
The image house displays Buddha in various poses, while detailed wall paintings tell stories from the Jataka tales. These visual depictions help visitors understand Buddhist teachings through imagery.
A meditation hall and the Saranatyissa Dhamma Hall serve as spaces where religious instruction takes place and visitors can participate in activities. The site is also easily accessible from nearby Aluthgama for pilgrims and travelers.
A striking feature is the 48-meter tall Samadhi Buddha statue completed in 2006, known as the world's highest seated Buddha figure. This towering sculpture demonstrates modern craftsmanship at an ancient religious site.
