Masjid Al Abrar, Beruwala

Masjid Al Abrar is a mosque in Beruwala distinguished by its white exterior with rounded architectural features and ornate decorative patterns. The structure sits near a large pond and displays characteristic Islamic architectural elements throughout.

The mosque was founded in the 10th century by Arab merchants traveling along trade routes to China. It stands as the oldest Islamic structure in Sri Lanka and marks the beginning of Arab settlement on the island.

The mosque serves as a gathering place for the Muslim community during daily prayers and religious study. People visit regularly to pray together and participate in community activities.

Visitors must remove their shoes before entering and dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered. Women should wear a headscarf, and it helps to check prayer times beforehand to visit at an appropriate time.

The mosque was featured on two commemorative stamps issued by the Sri Lankan postal service in 2003 to honor the country's Arab origins. These stamps celebrate the long history of Arab presence in Sri Lanka.
