Barberyn Lighthouse, Maritime lighthouse on Barberyn Island, Beruwala, Sri Lanka.
Barberyn Lighthouse is a maritime tower located on an island off the coast of Beruwala in Sri Lanka. The cylindrical white granite structure stands 34 meters tall and has a balcony with a lantern room at its top.
The lighthouse began operations in November 1889 under the Imperial Lighthouse Service. It received modern navigation equipment in 1969.
The lighthouse has been an Archaeological Protected Monument since 2016 and shows the maritime history of Sri Lanka's southwestern coast. It represents the connection between Beruwala and the seafaring traditions of this region.
The lighthouse sits on an island about 800 meters from the mainland and is accessible by boat. Visitors should check tides and weather conditions before visiting since the crossing depends on sea conditions.
The lighthouse uses a hyperradiant Fresnel lens system that sends a beam across about 27 nautical miles of ocean. This advanced optical technology was among the finest navigation aids of its era.
