Colombo National Art Gallery, Art museum in Cinnamon Gardens, Sri Lanka
The Colombo National Art Gallery is a museum in Cinnamon Gardens with three exhibition wings that house permanent collections of portraits, landscapes, and rotating displays of contemporary works. The spaces are arranged so visitors can walk through successive galleries viewing different artistic pieces.
The museum was founded in 1932 after the Ceylon Society of Arts proposed the idea in 1911, though construction was delayed by World War I. The institution was designed as a space for presenting artistic works from the region.
The gallery displays works from local artists and reflects contemporary artistic expressions that have developed in Sri Lanka. Visitors can see how different styles and techniques come together in the exhibited pieces.
Access is through Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha in a central area of Colombo, with opening hours mainly on weekdays. Admission is free, making the visit accessible to everyone, and the rooms can be comfortably explored on foot.
The building was designed by architect A. C. G. S. Amarasekara and shows a carefully thought-out interior structure with spacious halls. The architecture itself contributes to the experience by presenting the works in specially proportioned spaces.
