Church of the Visitation, Trakai

Church of the Visitation, Trakai, Catholic basilica in Trakai, Lithuania.

The Church of the Visitation in Trakai is a red brick building situated on the Trakai peninsula, displaying Gothic structural elements alongside Baroque additions from later centuries. The interior features three naves that converge at an asymmetric apse, with an extensive collection of religious artwork and furnishings visible throughout the space.

Grand Duke Vytautas of Lithuania founded the church in 1409, incorporating materials salvaged from Trakai Island Castle into its construction. The structure underwent Baroque modifications over subsequent centuries, transforming its original Gothic appearance.

The church holds a sacred image known as the Mother of God of Trakai, which serves as a focal point for Lithuanian Catholic devotion and local religious practices. This venerated icon draws pilgrims who seek spiritual connection and participate in faith-centered observances.

The church is located at Birutės gatvė 5 in the town center and welcomes visitors interested in seeing its architecture and religious artwork. It is advisable to check opening times in advance, as regular services may affect public access to certain areas.

A family chapel dedicated to the Römeriai nobility was added to the southern wall of the presbytery around 1700 by General Matas Römeris of the Lithuanian Army. This addition reflects the practice of aristocratic patrons establishing private worship spaces within larger churches.
