Beidweiler Longwave Transmitter, Broadcasting transmitter in Canton of Grevenmacher, Luxembourg
The Beidweiler Longwave Transmitter is a broadcasting facility in Canton of Grevenmacher consisting of three guyed masts standing 290 meters tall with cage antennas. It operated on a frequency of 234 kHz and delivered power output up to 1500 kW.
The facility began operations in 1972 as a replacement for an earlier transmitter located elsewhere. Within a few years its transmission power was significantly increased to extend broadcast reach across a wider area.
The facility broadcast French-language radio programs that reached across borders and connected listeners throughout the region and beyond. Radio services like these shaped how people stayed informed and entertained in their daily lives.
The site is located on agricultural land and the tall masts are visible from considerable distances across the surrounding countryside. Access to the facility itself is typically restricted since it remains an active infrastructure site.
The transmitter was specifically designed to direct its signal toward France and ranked among the most powerful broadcasting stations on the continent. Operations ceased in 2023 after decades of continuous service.
