Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra, Administrative region in Western Sahara.
Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra is an administrative region spanning a large territory with four provinces that stretches across Western Sahara. It borders the Atlantic Ocean to the west and Mauritania to the east.
The region was established in 2015 through an administrative reorganization that merged Es Semara Province with the former Laâyoune-Boujdour-Sakia El Hamra territory. This restructuring took place under Moroccan governance.
Multiple languages coexist in daily life here, with Hassaniya Arabic, Tamazight, and Moroccan Darija heard in markets, homes, and streets. This linguistic diversity shapes how communities interact and express their identity.
The regional capital Laâyoune serves as the main hub, connecting various towns through an established road network. Smara is positioned centrally within the region and provides another important stopping point for travelers.
Sebkha Tah, a salt lake within the region, sits approximately 55 meters below sea level. This depression marks the lowest point in all of Western Sahara.
