Ouarzazate solar power station, Solar power station in Ouarzazate Province, Morocco
The Noor Ouarzazate Solar Complex is a large-scale solar installation in the desert region of Drâa-Tafilalet featuring multiple power plants that use different technologies. The facility spreads across thousands of hectares and combines various systems for electricity generation.
Construction of this solar facility began in May 2013 with the first phase becoming operational in February 2016 under the direction of King Mohammed VI. The development of the complex followed Morocco's plans to promote renewable energy in the region.
The facility represents Morocco's commitment to sustainable development, positioning the country as a leader in solar technology across the African continent.
The site is located in a desert region and is visible from a distance, with good views possible from the road toward Ouarzazate. Visitors should prepare for heat and bring plenty of water, as there is little shade available.
The facility uses three different technologies simultaneously: parabolic mirror systems, solar tower technology, and photovoltaic modules. Particularly interesting is the salt-based thermal storage that allows electricity generation even after sunset.
