Kasbah of Tifoultoute

The Kasbah of Tifoultoute is an earthen fortress with multiple towers and passages rising from elevated ground west of Ouarzazate in southern Morocco. The structure includes several interconnected building sections, courtyards, and narrow walkways that show how a traditional fortified residence was organized internally.

The fortress belonged to Thami El Glaoui, who served as Pasha of Marrakech from 1912 to 1956 during the French protectorate period. The building functioned as a seat of local power and played an important role in regional control during that era.

The fortress displays traditional Berber construction methods, with thick earthen walls and strategically positioned chambers reflecting regional building practices that remain visible today. Walking through its corridors shows how people adapted their architectural style to the surrounding landscape.

The site is located about 8 kilometers west of Ouarzazate and is reachable from the city by car. Local guides are available at the entrance and can provide detailed tours of the complex.

The fortress has appeared in numerous international film productions and remains a recurring location in cinema history. From its towers, you can look out across the Atlas Mountains and the surrounding oases below.
