Borj Dar el-Baroud

Borj Dar el-Baroud is a military fort in Tangier built with thick stone walls on elevated ground near the port to command the surrounding maritime approaches. The structure spans three levels accessible to visitors exploring its interior spaces and views.

This fort was built in the 17th century as a military stronghold and ammunition storage facility protecting Tangier from invasions across the Strait of Gibraltar. A 2014 restoration incorporated Portuguese-era elements and transformed the site into an interpretation center for the city's fortification network.

The fort houses exhibits showcasing maritime battle models and replicas of traditional Moroccan military uniforms that illustrate the city's defense strategies. These displays help visitors understand how the local garrison once protected the coast.

Entry passes through a narrow passage into a vestibule featuring an original door from the Hegira period, with guided tours available throughout the fort. The elevated location means visitors encounter stairs and steps when moving between the three levels.

The fort preserves an original entrance door dating to the Hegira period, kept intact during the 2014 restoration and allowing visitors to touch a piece directly connected to early Islamic history. This artifact links the site's ancient past to its current role as a cultural space.
