Bihor, Medieval ruins and historical region in northeastern Montenegro.
Bihor is a medieval fortress ruin in northeastern Montenegro, located at the confluence of two rivers. The remaining walls and foundations sit within a landscape of river valleys and forested slopes.
The fortress was built during the medieval period and fell to Ottoman forces in the 15th century. After nearby towns grew in importance, the site gradually lost its role and fell into ruin.
The region has been home to different communities living side by side for generations. Walking through nearby villages today, you can see traditional ways of life and local crafts that still shape daily routines.
The ruins are most easily reached on foot from the surrounding river valleys, so sturdy footwear is a good idea. Visiting during the warmer months makes the paths easier to walk and the site more accessible overall.
The position at the river confluence was chosen because it controlled every crossing between the valleys, making it very hard to bypass. You can still read this logic in the landscape today, standing among the ruins and looking out at both river courses.
