Lake Plav, Glacial lake in Plav Municipality, Montenegro
Lake Plav is a glacial lake in Plav Municipality, in northeastern Montenegro, nestled between mountain slopes at around 900 meters above sea level. It is the largest glacial lake in the country and sits at the edge of the town of Plav.
The lake formed around 10,000 years ago when glaciers carved out the mountain valley and meltwater collected in the hollow they left behind. The shape of the surrounding slopes still reflects that ancient process.
Along the shore, an old Ottoman watchtower and a mosque from the 1400s still stand and can be visited today. Walking past them gives a clear sense of how long people have lived around this water.
In warmer months the lake draws swimmers, kayakers, and anglers, while in winter the surface can freeze and become a place for ice skating. Weather in this mountain area can change quickly, so checking conditions before you go is a good habit.
Underground springs and limestone caves hidden beneath the surrounding mountains feed the lake with fresh water year-round. These hidden sources are invisible from the surface but play a key role in keeping the water level stable.
