Biogradska Gora, National park and nature reserve in Kolašin, Montenegro.
Biogradska Gora is a national park and nature reserve in the Bjelasica mountain range. The area spans roughly 54 square kilometers and contains untouched forest, mountain slopes, and glacial lakes that form the main features of the landscape.
The area came under protection following Montenegro's independence from Ottoman rule in 1878. King Nikola I Petrović-Njegoš designated a forest section as his personal reserve, Branik Kralja Nikole, marking its importance to the newly freed nation.
The name comes from the nearby settlement of Biogradski. Herders who have worked these mountain slopes for generations continue their seasonal livestock practices, shaping how the land is used and cared for today.
Buses run regularly from Podgorica and Bijelo Polje to reach the park, where a visitor center provides information about the trails and site. Good hiking boots and preparation for mountain terrain are important, as paths vary in difficulty.
About 16 square kilometers of the park contains virgin forest where many trees are over 500 years old. These ancient trees reach heights around 60 meters (200 feet) and create a forest unlike most others in the region.
