Lake Slano, artificial lake in Montenegro
Lake Slano is a large reservoir in Nikšić Municipality covering roughly 9 square kilometers with average depths around 30 meters. The water is surrounded by gentle rolling hills and dotted with small islands, the largest being Viza, which add visual interest to the shoreline.
The lake was built in 1950 to supply water to the Perućica hydroelectric facility. The project connected it through channels to two neighboring lakes, Krupac and Vrtac, creating a network for power generation and local water supply.
The name Lake Slano refers to its salty character, a feature from its natural origins. Today the surrounding villages and fishing practices show how the water remains woven into the fabric of local life and daily routines.
The shoreline is rough and not easily accessible, so wear sturdy shoes and allow time to navigate the winding paths to reach the water. Facilities like restrooms and marked trails are limited, so bring your own water and snacks if you plan to spend the day here.
In 2016 the British car company Jaguar selected the rough terrain around the lake as a testing site for its first sport-utility vehicle, the F-Pace. This surprising choice demonstrates how the lake's natural landscape attracted international attention for vehicle development.
