Mili Atoll, Coral atoll in Ratak Chain, Marshall Islands
The second largest atoll of Marshall Islands encompasses 92 islands and a 760-square-kilometer lagoon surrounded by coral formations and marine life.
The British merchant vessel Rolla discovered the atoll in 1803, leading to subsequent colonization by Germany in 1885 and Japanese occupation during World Wars.
The population of 497 inhabitants maintains traditional fishing practices across six main villages, including Mili, Nallu, Enejet, Lukonor, Tokewa, and Wau.
Two airports, Mili and Enejit, serve the atoll with Air Marshall Islands operating small aircraft connections to other parts of the country.
The atoll retains substantial World War II artifacts, including military bunkers, artillery pieces, and aircraft remnants from Japanese occupation periods.
