Tanezrouft, Desert region in southern Algeria and northern Mali.
Tanezrouft is a desert region stretching across southern Algeria and northern Mali, characterized by flat terrain, gravel surfaces, and minimal vegetation. The landscape sits at an elevation of around 310 meters above sea level throughout the region.
Since around 500 BC, the region functioned as a trade route connecting the Niger River valley with the northern areas of Tidikelt and Touat. Caravans relied on this passage for centuries to move goods across vast distances of the Sahara.
The name comes from Tuareg languages and means Land of Thirst, chosen by the nomadic groups who inhabited this region. The few residents here have adapted to extreme conditions and rely on rare water sources scattered across the landscape for their survival.
A trans-Saharan route connects Bechar in Algeria through Reggane toward Tessalit and Gao in Mali, making it a key passage for travel. The Poste Maurice Cortier serves as a stopping point where you can refuel before continuing your journey across the arid landscape.
Beneath the dry surface lies an underground aquifer stretching thousands of feet deep, holding a hidden water reserve beneath the arid landscape. This subsurface water demonstrates that the geology below the desert floor differs dramatically from what appears on top.
