Wabaria bridge, Bridge over Niger River in Gao, Mali
Wabaria Bridge is a structure spanning the Niger River across approximately 270 meters. It connects the right bank settlement of Gounzoureye with the city of Gao on the left bank and serves as a key transportation route for the region.
The structure opened in 2006 and marked an important moment in the region's infrastructure development. It resulted from collaboration between several countries that worked together on this project.
The bridge joins two important population centers and makes daily movement between communities easier. It has become a central point where people from different directions meet and cross paths.
The structure is used by vehicles on National Route 18 and provides access for motorized traffic. Pedestrians can also cross the area, with the best time during cooler parts of the day.
During the 2013 Mali War, the bridge became a strategic location where French special forces engaged in military operations against MUJAO forces.
