Strand Hotel, historic hotel in Yangon, Myanmar
The Strand Hotel is a luxury hotel built in 1901 on Strand Road with views over the Yangon River, displaying British colonial architecture. The building features teak wood paneling, marble floors, high ceilings, and ceiling fans designed by the Sarkies brothers, known for their hotels across Asia.
The hotel was founded in 1901 and was quickly purchased by the Sarkies brothers, who also owned famous properties like Raffles in Singapore. After damage during World War II and years of decline, it was bought by a local businessman in 1989 and restored to a boutique hotel in the early 1990s.
The hotel bears the name of the street on which it stands and reflects the architecture of the British colonial era. The veranda and wood paneling show design principles meant to provide cooling and elegance in tropical heat, details that visitors still see today.
The hotel offers a French restaurant, a café with tea service, the Sarkies Bar, a swimming pool, spa, and fitness center for guests. All rooms are suites with high ceilings, river views, and modern amenities including air conditioning and WiFi.
The hotel received a blue plaque from the Yangon Heritage Trust in 2019, an honor held by only a few buildings in the city. This marker recognizes its important role in Yangon's history and culture for both visitors and residents.
