Upper Paunglaung Dam, Gravity dam on Paunglaung River, Myanmar
Upper Paunglaung Dam is a gravity structure built across the Paunglaung River to control water flow and store resources. The construction uses roller-compacted concrete and creates a large reservoir behind it.
Development began in 2005 with specialized concrete placement starting in 2010. Completion in 2015 enabled hydroelectric power generation for Myanmar's national system.
The dam construction required the relocation of 15,000 residents from the surrounding area, leading to changes in traditional agricultural practices and living patterns.
Viewing from outside is possible, but access to internal facilities may be restricted. Check local conditions beforehand and bring sun and rain protection for your visit.
The reservoir holds enough water to support power generation at another dam located downstream. This cooperation between the two structures shows how the system was designed to maximize energy production across the watershed.
