Dornod

Dornod is a province in eastern Mongolia covering vast grasslands, forests, and river systems stretching across the landscape. The territory shares borders with Russia to the north and China to the south, forming the easternmost part of the country.

The province was named Choibalsan in 1941 after a revolutionary leader, then renamed Dornod in 1963 as part of administrative reorganization. This change reflected shifts in how the country organized its eastern territories.

The region is home to Mongols and Buryats who maintain traditional ways of life centered on herding and connection to the land. Visitors can observe how communities adapt their daily routines to the rhythm of the seasons and open grasslands.

The capital city of Choibalsan has an international airport with regular flights to Ulaanbaatar and regional destinations. Summer months offer the most accessible conditions for travel and exploring the grasslands.

The region is one of the most sparsely populated places on earth, with fewer than one person per square kilometer living across its territory. Despite this remoteness, its location bordering both Russia and China has made it geopolitically important to the nation.
