Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mellieħa

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mellieħa is a limestone building with a bell tower housing three bells and stained glass windows throughout its interior. A Byzantine-style fresco decorates the space, located within a chamber carved directly from the rock.

The shrine originated in a natural cave, with traditions suggesting its foundation during Saint Paul's time in Malta around 60 AD. A crypt was hewn from the rock in the 16th century, reflecting the layers of construction and devotion added over time.

The shrine draws pilgrims who light candles and kneel before the statue of Mary to offer their prayers. Personal offerings and votive plaques left by visitors create a visible record of devotion throughout the sanctuary.

The site is best visited during morning hours when natural light fills the interior and reveals details of the space clearly. Visitors should dress appropriately and move quietly, as this is an active place of worship where people come to pray.

A tunnel behind the shrine is filled with personal votive offerings that pilgrims have left over generations. This hidden collection reveals the deep emotional connection people hold with this sacred space.
