Qortin Redoubt
Qortin Redoubt is a small limestone fortification with a pentagon shape and low surrounding walls built for quick defensive action. The structure had a rectangular blockhouse in its center where soldiers could shelter and store supplies during watch duties.
The redoubt was built between 1715 and 1716 by the Knights Hospitaller to defend Malta's coast against sea attacks. It was one piece of a larger defensive network designed to protect the island from pirates and enemy fleets.
The redoubt is named after a nearby area and reflects how the Knights Hospitaller prioritized coastal defense to protect their territory. Its location shows the strategic thinking of that time in safeguarding settlements from sea-based threats.
The site is accessible by foot but lies in a quiet coastal area that requires time to explore via walking paths. Wear sturdy shoes since the trails are natural and uneven in places where you walk around the ruins.
The original parapet that crowned the top was removed and the central blockhouse was replaced by a modern summer residence. Despite these changes, the distinctive pentagon shape remains visible when viewed from the surrounding area.
