Mistra Gate, Baroque gateway in St. Paul's Bay, Malta
The Mistra Gate is a baroque gateway in St. Paul's Bay featuring elaborate stone carvings and heraldic emblems of Grand Master Manuel Pinto da Fonseca. The structure displays typical baroque architectural characteristics with carefully worked decorative elements throughout its facade.
The gateway was built in 1760 as the entrance to an estate belonging to the Monte della Redenzione degli Schiavi. Following the French occupation in 1798, the property lost its original purpose and the gate changed hands.
The structure received Grade 1 national monument status from the Malta Environment and Planning Authority, marking its exceptional architectural value.
The gate is located directly along a street in St. Paul's Bay and can be easily found while exploring the area. Access is available at any time since the monument is publicly accessible without special arrangements needed.
Students from the University of Malta's Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering conducted a detailed survey of the gate in 1995.
