Armier Tower, Coastal watchtower in Mellieħa, Malta
Armier Tower stands on a rise overlooking Armier Bay and has two stories with a square footprint, typical of Maltese coastal fortifications from the 1600s. The structure is solid and compact, built with thick stone walls designed to withstand attack.
The tower was built in 1658 as part of a broader fortification program. Over time, gun batteries and cannons were added to strengthen its defensive capabilities.
The tower comes from a period when the Knights of Malta built defenses along the shore to protect against sea raids and invasions. These structures were part of a wider network of watchtowers that guarded the island.
The tower sits on the coast north of Mellieħa and is reachable from the coastal road. The location offers open views across the bay and surrounding waters.
In the 1800s the structure served as a British naval station, with interior rooms added during that period. Such changes show how these buildings took on different roles over time.
