Edo State, Administrative state in southern Nigeria
Edo State is an administrative region in southern Nigeria that covers a large territory in the middle belt of the country. Benin City forms the administrative center, surrounded by smaller towns and rural areas with many villages.
The area was once part of the Kingdom of Benin, which existed for centuries starting from the 11th century. The current administrative unit was created in 1991 when the former Bendel State was divided into two separate regions.
Residents speak Edo, Esan or Afemai depending on which part of the region they live in. You hear these languages in markets and at public gatherings, and many older buildings still carry names from the time of the old kingdom.
The climate is tropical with high temperatures and heavy rainfall during much of the year. Travelers should bring light clothing and prepare for changing weather, especially during the rainy months.
The region produces a large share of Nigerian rubber in plantations that spread across wide areas. Visitors see the distinctive rubber trees and processing plants on many roads along the main routes.
