Lagos Polo Club, Sport club venue at Ikoyi, Nigeria
Lagos Polo Club is a sports venue in Ikoyi featuring well-maintained grass fields, spectator seating, and facilities built for high-level polo tournaments. The grounds are set up to host competitions for both national and international players.
The grounds were founded in 1904 by British Naval Officers and repurposed a former British Army Parade ground that had an airstrip for early matches. This existing infrastructure allowed the club to quickly become an established polo venue.
The club represents a legacy from the colonial era and remains a gathering place for elites and international visitors today. Match days draw crowds who come to watch the skill and tradition of this rare sport.
The club grounds are easiest to reach by car, as Ikoyi has several access roads leading in and out of the area. The visitor experience is best during the tournament season from November to June when events happen regularly.
The grounds launched a tree-planting initiative adding more than 150 trees to improve the local environment and air quality in Ikoyi. This program showed how a private sports facility could also serve the broader community.
