San Franciscoloods, Harbor storage shed in Rotterdam, Netherlands
San Franciscoloods is a harbor storage shed stretching about 360 meters along the northern edge of Katendrecht with an open ground level designed for efficient cargo handling. The structure features a functional steel frame that allowed ships to be loaded and unloaded with speed and ease.
The building was constructed in 1923 for the Holland-Amerika Line and held the title of the world's largest harbor warehouse at the time of its completion. In 1944 it suffered severe damage during German military operations and was subsequently divided into two separate structures.
The structure includes an arcade along Deliplein that served as a passage for vehicles while offering views across to Rijnhaven. This open design shows how the place was built to blend movement and sightlines into its everyday function.
The site is accessible on foot via Deliplein and can be easily explored due to its open structure which also allows for good photography. When visiting, keep in mind that parts of the location remain in active use, so it is wise to be respectful of ongoing operations.
The building retains its original light green steel doors and frames, preserved through careful restoration work. This color choice was typical for harbor facilities of that era and gives the place its distinctive industrial appearance.
