Educatorium, building in Utrecht, Netherlands
The Educatorium is a university building in Utrecht completed in the late 1990s, located on the campus. This modern structure features glass and steel elements, connects two older campus buildings, and houses large auditoriums, exam rooms, an extensive cafeteria, and various study areas.
The building was designed by the renowned firm OMA and architect Rem Koolhaas to foster interaction between students and teachers. In 2015, it was designated as a municipal monument alongside seven other university buildings, recognizing its importance to the city's recent history.
The building's name reflects its purpose as a place for teaching and meeting. Today, students and staff use it daily as a gathering space for exchange, learning, and events.
The building is open early mornings through late evenings Monday to Friday and is easily reached by public transport such as buses and trams. Visitors traveling by car will find parking nearby, and the building is fully accessible with elevators, ramps, and designated spaces for disabled visitors.
The building features curved concrete surfaces arranged like two interlocking layers that create a flowing, dynamic quality. The upper surfaces are covered with grass, serving as roof gardens that provide insulation and absorb rainwater.
