Hardangervidda National Park, National park on mountain plateau in southern Norway
Hardangervidda spans 3,422 square kilometers across three counties, featuring high plateaus, numerous lakes, and diverse wildlife at an elevation of 1,100 meters.
Archaeological excavations throughout Hardangervidda have revealed Stone Age settlements connected to reindeer migration patterns dating back thousands of years.
The Norwegian Mountain Touring Association maintains a network of traditional mountain huts and marked paths throughout Hardangervidda, preserving outdoor recreational heritage.
The park offers marked trails for hiking from July to September, while winter activities include cross-country skiing on designated routes until late June.
The park contains Europe's largest mountain plateau and supports the southernmost arctic species, including substantial wild reindeer populations.
