Birtamod, municipality of Jhapa district, Nepal
Birtamod is a rapidly growing city in southeastern Nepal in Jhapa District that serves as an important trading and transport hub. The city spans about 78 square kilometers with around 120,000 residents and contains numerous shops, banks, hospitals, and schools that benefit from its connection to the East-West Highway and the Indian border.
Birtamod started as a small market town and gained municipality status in 2014 after smaller village councils were merged. The construction of the continuous East-West Highway and its proximity to the Indian border at Kakarbhitta made it a major trading and transit point from the 1990s onward.
Birtamod draws people from various ethnic groups including Brahmin, Chhetri, Rai, Limbu, and Tharu who speak Nepali, Maithili, Limbu, and Hindi. Festivals like Dashain, Tihar, and Holi bring these diverse communities together, visible in the markets where traditional foods and goods sit side by side.
Birtamod sits about 100 kilometers from Biratnagar and connects via the East-West Highway to larger cities like Biratnagar and Kathmandu where buses and trucks run regularly. Airports at Bhadrapur roughly 20 kilometers away and in India roughly 40 kilometers away provide additional travel options for visitors wanting to explore the region.
The city plays an often-overlooked role as a crossroads between the Himalayan hills and the southern plains of Nepal, as many hill residents migrate here for work. This movement has created a blend of highland and lowland culture visible in daily routines and the stories people share.
