Misamis Oriental, Administrative province in Northern Mindanao, Philippines
Misamis Oriental is a province in Northern Mindanao, Philippines, stretching along the Bohol Sea coast and covering 23 municipalities and 2 cities, including the capital Cagayan de Oro. The landscape ranges from narrow coastal plains to forested hills inland, crossed by several rivers flowing toward the sea.
The province was created in 1939 when Misamis was divided into two separate administrative territories because mountains prevented direct connection between the eastern and western parts. During Spanish colonial times, the area belonged to the larger Misamis region, but it gained its own administration only in the 20th century.
The name Misamis comes from the Subanen word ⁀kuyamis,´ meaning a type of coconut, showing the early importance of coastal resources in local life. Visitors notice that many older settlements cluster along river mouths, where fishing and trade shaped the rhythm of daily routines for generations.
A network of provincial roads links all municipalities, with main routes usually paved and secondary roads often narrower. Regular bus services and ferry connections run between coastal towns and inland areas, mainly through Cagayan de Oro as a central hub.
The province hosts the largest pineapple plantation in the Philippines, operated by Del Monte and covering wide sections of the gentle slopes. Visitors see long rows of pineapple plants stretching to the horizon and large processing facilities that organize exports across the region.
