Aurora Memorial National Park, protected area of the Philippines
Aurora Memorial National Park is a protected forest area in the Sierra Madre mountain range, spanning across Nueva Ecija and Aurora provinces in Central Luzon. The terrain consists of forested slopes and mountain trails leading to a prominent peak that hikers can reach on foot.
The area was first set aside as a protected zone in 1937 and then expanded in 1941 to cover a larger portion of the Sierra Madre range. The expansion brought more forest land under legal protection across the two provinces it spans.
The park takes its name from Aurora Quezon, wife of Philippine President Manuel Quezon, which gives the place a personal connection to the country's political history. Visitors walking the trails can see how nearby communities still rely on the forest and maintain a close relationship with the land.
A permit and a registered guide are required before entering the park and using its trails, so it is worth contacting local authorities in advance. The forest can be physically demanding, and conditions on the mountain change quickly, so preparing properly before setting out makes a real difference.
The forest is home to dozens of amphibian and reptile species, along with rare birds including the Philippine eagle, making it one of the most species-rich areas in the region. This concentration of wildlife is a key reason why access to the park remains tightly controlled.
