Bessang Pass Natural Monument, Protected area in Cervantes, Philippines
Bessang Pass Natural Monument is a protected area in Cervantes, Ilocos Sur, Philippines, located at the southeastern edge of Langiatan Hill near Mount Namogoian. The site is made up of pine and mossy forests crossed by walking trails and observation areas.
In 1945, Filipino troops won a decisive battle here against Japanese forces, an event widely seen as hastening Japan's surrender in the Philippines. The site was later designated a natural monument to protect both its forest cover and its historical memory.
A memorial built in 1954 honors the Filipino soldiers who fought and died here during World War II. Many visitors come to pay their respects, and the surrounding pine forest gives the place a solemn, unhurried feeling.
The site is reached via the Tagudin-Cervantes-Sabangan Road, which connects to the Halsema Highway. Weather at this elevation can change quickly, so bringing warm and waterproof clothing is a good idea before setting out.
The forests here are home to 29 bird species, many of which depend on Bessang Creek and the Matukbo River for water and food. These same streams also supply fresh water to farming communities living around the monument.
