Fort Mills, Military fortification on Corregidor Island, Philippines
Fort Mills is a former American military fortification located on Corregidor Island in the Philippines. The complex spreads across three elevation zones called Topside, Middleside, and Bottomside, originally linked by an electric railway system.
The United States Army Corps of Engineers built the fort between 1904 and 1910 as part of Manila Bay's defense system. It became a battleground during World War II and was heavily damaged before being partially preserved.
The Malinta Tunnel served as a military command center and shelter for Philippine civilians during World War II. Walking through it today shows how people lived and worked together during that time.
Visitors reach the site by ferry from Manila, then explore the ruins on foot or with guided tours. Sturdy shoes and plenty of water are recommended since the terrain is uneven and shade is limited.
The island preserves one of the largest collections of American coastal defense weapons, including twelve 12-inch guns. These weapons show the firepower that once protected the entire bay.
