Magapit Suspension Bridge

Magapit Suspension Bridge, Suspension bridge in Lal-lo, Philippines

The Magapit Suspension Bridge crosses the Cagayan River in Lal-lo, joining the eastern and western parts of the town. It has two traffic lanes and pedestrian walkways that allow people to move across on foot.

The bridge was built in 1978 by engineer Angel G. Villanueva working with Japanese consultants under IWCDC. This project marked a major step forward in transportation for Cagayan province.

Local people call this bridge the Golden Gate of Cagayan, showing how central it is to daily life in the region. It connects communities that would otherwise be isolated from each other on opposite sides of the river.

The bridge is part of the Maharlika Highway and connects two major sections of the municipality. You can cross on foot or by vehicle, and there is space set aside for pedestrians to walk safely.

The bridge was one of only a handful of crossings over the Cagayan River in the region for many years. A major renovation in 2012 meant that temporary ferry services had to be set up to keep people moving across the river during the work.
