Bust of Ferdinand Marcos, Historical monument in Pugo, Philippines
The concrete bust of Ferdinand Marcos stands 30 meters tall on Mount Shontoug along the Aspiras-Palispis Highway in Tuba, Benguet.
Constructed between 1978 and 1980 by the Philippine Tourism Authority, the monument experienced a significant explosion in 2002 that destroyed its upper portion.
The construction displaced Ibaloi communities from their ancestral lands, leading to legal battles that culminated in a 2007 Supreme Court ruling favoring indigenous rights.
The monument location offers views of the surrounding landscape and remains accessible via the Marcos Highway connecting Pugo to Baguio City.
Two sculptors, including principal artist Anselmo B. Dayag, passed away before completing the monument, which was initially hidden behind scaffolding during construction.
