M-5 motorway, Interstate highway through Punjab and Sindh, Pakistan
The M-5 is a controlled-access highway running 392 kilometers from Multan to Sukkur and linking Punjab with Sindh through a six-lane divided road. Along the route, it passes through Shujabad, Jalalpur Pirwala, Ahmedpur East, Rahimyar Khan, and Sadiqabad before reaching its destination.
Construction began in August 2016 following a groundbreaking ceremony led by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, with the highway opening to traffic in November 2019. The project emerged as a major component of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor initiative.
The motorway connects multiple districts including Shujabad, Jalalpur Pirwala, Ahmedpur East, Rahimyar Khan, and Sadiqabad, supporting local communities and regional development.
Multiple service areas with basic facilities are available along the road for travelers who need to stop during their journey. The speed limit of 120 kilometers per hour helps maintain consistent travel times between destinations.
Chinese state-owned banks provided roughly 90 percent of the 2.94 billion dollar project cost through specialized loans. This financing arrangement reflects broader infrastructure partnerships emerging across South Asia in recent years.
