Lake Saiful Muluk, Alpine lake in Kaghan Valley, Pakistan
Saiful Muluk is an alpine lake at 3,224 meters (10,577 feet) elevation in Kaghan Valley in Mansehra District, Pakistan, surrounded by peaks of the Karakorum range. The water fills a basin formed by glacial deposits and reflects the steep slopes rising from all sides.
Glaciers carved the basin during the ice age as the ice retreated and left behind rock and sediment. The valley developed into a route through the mountains that travelers and traders used for centuries.
The name comes from an Egyptian legend about a prince and a fairy that visitors hear today in songs from local musicians. Many travelers come here to connect with this story and experience the quiet of the place.
The approach from Naran follows a nine-kilometer unpaved road with tight curves that requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle. The air is thin at this elevation, so visitors should walk slowly and bring enough water.
Large brown trout swim in the cold water and can weigh over seven kilograms (15 pounds). Around the shore, 26 different alpine plant species grow that have adapted to the harsh conditions.
