The district spans 122 square kilometers along the southern edge of Karachi, containing major urban developments and governmental institutions.
The district, established in 1972, underwent several administrative changes until 2013 when parts of Jamshed Town transferred to Karachi East District.
The population reflects diverse linguistic patterns with Urdu speakers at 34.7%, Sindhi at 15.62%, and Balochi at 11.58% of residents.
The district houses numerous corporate offices, the Sindh Assembly, Governor House, and Chief Minister House within its administrative boundaries.
The entire population of 2,329,764 residents lives in urban settings, making it one of the most densely populated districts in Pakistan.
