Keenjhar Lake, lake in Sindh, Pakistan
Keenjhar Lake is a large body of water in Thatta District, Pakistan, also known locally as Kalri Lake. The lake stretches across a considerable area with calm waters, green shorelines, and is located about 30 kilometers from Thatta.
The lake was formed from the merger of two older lakes named Sonehri and Keenjhar. Since 1976, it has been designated as a Ramsar site, gaining international recognition as a protected wetland important for wildlife and regional ecological health.
The lake is known locally as Kalri Lake and holds deep meaning for the surrounding communities. Fishing and agricultural practices tied to the water have shaped daily life here for generations, making it central to local traditions and livelihoods.
Motorboats are available for hire to explore the water or visit small islands and a shrine in the middle. Cabana-style huts line the shore and can be rented for the day, with basic restaurants and stalls serving drinks and food.
The lake is connected to the legend of Prince Jam Tamachi, whose grave sits in the middle of the water and draws visitors paying respects. This love story between the ruler and a fisherwoman named Noori is deeply rooted in local culture and draws those interested in learning about this romantic tale.
