Kudowa-Zdrój, Administrative center in Lower Silesia Province, Poland.
Kudowa-Zdrój is a small town in Lower Silesia that sits in the valleys and hillsides below the Table Mountains, a short drive from the Czech border. The built-up area follows the terrain with spa houses, villas and landscaped parks spread across several neighborhoods.
The springs were mentioned as early as the 13th century, but spa operations only began in the 17th century under Bohemian rule. After the Second World War the town became part of Poland and continued to develop as a state-run health resort.
Visitors filling mugs and cups at the ornamental fountains in the spa park follow a ritual that has continued for generations. The custom of tasting the mineral water directly from the springs remains part of daily life for many residents.
Buses and cars reach the town via regional roads from Kłodzko or directly from the Czech side. Most hiking trails into the surrounding mountains start at the edge of town and suit a range of fitness levels.
Three separate pavilions in the spa park each dispense a different mineral water that varies in taste and composition. Many visitors sample all three in turn and then decide which one they prefer.
