Bożydar-Kałęczyn, Former suburban settlement in Warsaw, Poland
Bożydar-Kałęczyn was a suburban settlement on the outskirts of Warsaw that developed where Książęca Street and Smolna Street now run. The area stretched across what are now the districts of Śródmieście Południowe and Old Ochota and once functioned as an independent place with its own governance.
The settlement was founded in 1702 as an independent jurisdiction outside Warsaw's control, which exempted its residents from city taxes. It remained separate for over 90 years until it was absorbed into the expanding city in 1794.
The settlement became a refuge for Jewish families who built their own neighborhood called Nowa Jerozolima within its borders. This community developed its own way of life and local traditions until residents were forced to leave in the early 1700s due to city restrictions.
The location of this former settlement is hard to recognize today since the area is completely covered by modern Warsaw. Visitors can get a sense of the former site mainly through historical records and a few surviving street names like Jerusalem Avenue.
Among the few surviving traces is Jerusalem Avenue, which preserves the name of the former Nowa Jerozolima neighborhood. This street follows a path from the time before Warsaw's expansion and silently echoes the community that once lived there.
