Fort Ia w Poznaniu, Military fort in Starołęka, Poland.
Fort Ia is a military installation in Poznań with a trapezoidal layout that contains two separate barrack blocks, one positioned under the rampart and another in the rear with the main entrance. The structure is protected by a dry moat about 6 meters deep and 9 meters wide, with defensive positions in corner caponiers.
Construction of the fort started in 1887 and was completed in 1890 as part of the broader Poznań Fortress defense system consisting of 18 separate fortification structures. It served as a key element of Prussian military strategy in the region during the late 1800s.
The fort was named after General Hermann von Boyen starting in 1902, but received a new name in 1931 to honor Krzysztof Arciszewski. Visitors can still trace this naming history through inscriptions and markers found throughout the grounds.
The site is best reached on foot, and visits are most comfortable during warm, dry weather. The grounds are generally accessible, but wearing sturdy shoes is advisable since the terrain can be uneven.
The grounds were designated as a Natura 2000 protected area and serve as an important winter shelter for bat species. During cold months, up to 110 bats of various kinds find refuge within the structure.
