Fort Roon

Fort Roon is a military fortification in Poznań with a rectangular layout and rounded corners, built as part of a larger fortress system. The structure contains multiple defensive levels and is surrounded by a water moat reinforced with earthen slopes and counter-slopes.

The fort was built in 1832 according to designs by Karl von Grolman as part of Poznań's defensive system. It served as a connected outpost linking with nearby Fort Winiary and remained strategically important throughout the 19th century.

The fort carries echoes of multiple names from different occupying powers, representing layers of military control over the centuries. Walking through it, you sense how this place shifted hands and purposes as empires and nations changed.

Access to the fort is restricted because parts of it serve as a civil defense shelter and require special authorization. Contact the facility management in advance to confirm whether visiting is possible and what areas may be accessible.
