Wielka Śluza

Wielka Śluza is a lock structure on the Warta River in Poznań measuring about 82 meters long and 19 meters wide. It contained multiple spans and two central openings for vessel passage, with eastern and western sections still visible today.

This lock was built around 1832 under engineer Karl von Grolman as part of the fortress defensive system. It served as one of the initial components designed to protect the city through water control.

This lock represents how water management shaped the city's relationship with the Warta River during the 19th century. Local people depended on such structures to prevent flooding while allowing river traffic to flow through their city.

This site is best explored on foot by approaching the riverbank to view the remaining pillars from different angles. The remnants sit directly beside the water and are accessible, though visitor facilities are minimal.

The lock incorporated vertical gates built directly into its pillars to control water flow for defensive flooding when needed. This innovative design allowed operators to rapidly manage water levels without separate external controls.
