Szaniec FS-22, 19th century Austrian fortification in Podgórze Duchackie, Poland.
Szaniec FS-22 is a seven-sided military stronghold in Podgórze built with earth ramparts and a dry moat running along all sides. The fortification demonstrates the defensive construction techniques of 19th century military engineering with its geometric layout.
Construction took place from 1855 to 1856 as a defensive component of the Kraków Fortress system built by the Austrian rulers. The site later became incorporated into military operations during subsequent conflicts that affected the region.
The fort stands as a physical witness to multiple occupations and conflicts that shaped this region over generations.
The site is accessible today and maintains its connection to nearby fortifications forming part of a wider defensive network. Visitors should be prepared for uneven terrain and exposed earth embankments when walking the perimeter.
The fortification contained four artillery platforms positioned at its corners to provide covering fire across the defensive lines. Infantry shooting positions are still visible along the rampart sections designed for ground-level defense.
