Fort Kościuszko in Kraków, Military fortification in Kraków, Poland
Fort Kościuszko is a military fortification in Kraków with a hexagonal layout and corner bastions. The structure features three larger bastions facing west and two smaller defensive positions protecting the eastern barrack building.
Austrian forces built the fort between 1851 and 1856 as a strategic defensive position in the region. It served as an important military stronghold within the broader fortification system of the area.
The fort bears the name of General Tadeusz Kościuszko, a figure of great importance to Polish people. Walking through, visitors encounter reminders of his significance to the nation and its struggle for independence.
Visitors can find a restaurant, museum exhibits, and various facilities on site. Ongoing restoration work reveals historical fortification elements and provides insight into how the structure was built.
An earthen rampart called FS-3, built near the fort in 1854, has remained unchanged despite all the modifications made to surrounding defensive structures. This original state makes it a rare example of an unaltered fortification element from that era.
